Janie C. Powell Memorial Scholarship

Number of Scholarships

  • Awarded once per year

  • Maximum of two (2) scholarships awarded per year (different recipients)

    • Second application accepted after completion of previous award requirements

  • Maximum of two (2) scholarships per person per lifetime 

 

Award Amount

  • $500 per recipient for one semester per year (Fall, Spring or Summer)

  • Minimum of 3 credit hours taken per semester scholarship is applied

  • Any of the $1,000 allocated to scholarships that is not awarded, becomes available for grants

Timelines

July 1, 2024

  • LRID issues call for applications

  • Accept applications for Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and/or Summer 2025

July 31, 2024

  • Application closes

  • LRID BOD creates a scoring Rubric

​

August 1, 2024

  • Applications sent to Ad Hoc Scholarship Committee

  • Applicants names are removed prior to sending to Committee

​

August 15, 2024

  • Committee recommendations sent to LRID BOD

​

By August 31, 2024

  • LRID BOD considers/votes on committee recommendations or refers vote to members at General Business Meeting (depending on possible conflicts of interest)

​

By September 1, 2024

  • Awards announced (unless sent to General Membership for a vote)

  • Recognition given during LRID Conference, via LRID newsletter, and/or email  

Agreement

  • Completion of an agreement between recipient and LRID agreeing to adherence of requirements

​

Residency/Membership

  • Must be a current LA resident (proof required)

  • LRID membership not required

 

College Credits

  • A minimum of 12 college credit hours and a cumulative GPA 3.25 is required at the time of application verified via unofficial/official transcripts from an accredited university/college

 

Approved Course(s) 

Courses must be offered through an accredited institution

  • Deaf Culture

  • Interpreting (Interpreting III, Interpreting IV, Practicum, Theory of Interpretation, Intro to Interpreting, Intro to Transliterating etc.)

  • Other courses considered on a case-by-case basis

    • i.e., ASL III or higher, English

 

Payment

  • Submit invoice requesting reimbursement

  • Submit verification of course completion

 

Verification of Course Completion

  • Transcript of accepted course paid for by LRID with final grade 

  • Grade of C or higher must be achieved 

 

Application Criteria

  • Application 

  • RID CEU Transcript (if applicable)

  • Unofficial transcript (university/college)

  • Resume

 

Committee will use a Rubric created by the BOD 

Applicant names will be withheld from the committee
